Appreciation for the Body

This week I’ve been hobbling around in pain with a meniscus tear in my knee and using a cane to walk. For most of the week I was confined to a chair, being waited on by Ray (who did a spectacular job). The pain is lessening, and I’m scheduled for an MRI this week, then will know how to proceed. And if you’re thinking I should go to physical therapy, you’re right. I did when the knee pain first started a few weeks ago. I had two sessions and became worse; it resulted in needing a cane to walk, so they stopped treatment.

All that to say I’ve had a lot of time to rest, to reflect, to think, and to slow down. I don’t like this challenge. I’ve felt bored and even a little scared. I’m impatient. Yet, I take hope in what a wondrous machine the body is and how well equipped it is to heal and repair itself if I just give it space, respect and work with it. It’s a lesson of listening to what our bodies tell us. It is about taking care of ourselves, physically and mentally, and living in the moment rather than constantly pushing to tomorrow. Centered. Hopeful. Grateful. I do appreciate this body, I even appreciate this opportunity to re-set. And I totally look forward to walking with ease again soon.

Today I hope my example can be a reminder to you to appreciate your body. I encourage you to express appreciation to it for the life and support it gives you. It’s such a beautiful machine, isn’t it? Go out and take a walk. Enjoy a bit of nature. And stay well.
